Alice follows him and falls down a deep rabbit hole into a place unlike anything she has known.

She meets a Cheshire Cat that can vanish while leaving its grin behind, and she finds herself in the court of the Queen of Hearts, whose answer to nearly every problem is a demand for someone’s head.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is often described as literary nonsense, but its nonsense is carefully constructed. Carroll plays with grammar, mathematics, familiar sayings, school lessons, poetry, and the habits of polite Victorian society.

Conversations in Wonderland rarely go the way Alice expects. Characters answer questions with riddles, twist the meaning of ordinary words, and argue over rules they appear to invent on the spot.
